Mrs. and I aren’t the most technologically advanced people. We don’t own a DVR, a Blu-ray player, or have HDTV. We don’t have an iPhone or an iPad (although I do have an old iPod collecting dust somewhere). We don't do MySpace or Facebook and have never tweeted (or is it twittered?). We don’t own a Wii or a Kindle and had never used a GPS - until we went to Maine.
We flew into Boston on our way up to Maine two weeks ago and decided to get a rental car equipped with a GPS to help ensure we wouldn’t get lost on our drive up. Now I realize that a post about a GPS is about 10 years behind the times, but as I mentioned we'd never used a GPS before (heck, we don't even have power windows in our car). We were just hoping it would help supplement the maps we printed from Google and Mapquest. So we got into the car, programmed the GPS (which we nicknamed “Shirley”) and started our journey.
It won’t surprise those who have used a GPS that Shirley told us exactly where to turn, what streets to take, gave us the distance until each exit, and even a warning bell when we neared each point. After a few miles we tossed the maps in the backseat and relied on the GPS to tell us what to do. And Shirley didn’t lead us astray once, guiding us right to our bed and breakfast and all around Maine as necessary. To top it off while we were driving around I had to use the bathroom so we programmed the GPS to find the nearest Starbucks and in a matter of moments it directed us right to it, doing everything short of finding us a parking space.
Needless to say, two big thumbs up from each of us for the GPS. We’ll have to get one of these for our own car.
Next week a post on why you should have a cellular phone – you can make calls from almost anywhere!
