Challenge: Religious Theme
Leah Vincent was raised in an Ultra Orthodox Jewish household. As she entered her teen years, she started to push the bounds of what was considered acceptable behavior and, in consequence, her family begins to distance themselves from her. Leah's subsequent loneliness and poverty lead her to break further and then completely away from the traditions in which she was raised.
I found this memoir to be very intriguing, particularly the parts where Leah discussed Ultra Orthodox Jewish traditions, life, and society. When discussing the events of her life, she was brutally honest. I was shocked at how her family treated her and could see how that could lead to the depression and mental illness she suffered. Ultimately, though, she was able to pick herself up and come out on top.
