By Daphne du Maurier
I picked this up with my other short story book, Don’t Look
Now also by du Maurier, that I reviewed a few weeks ago.
The Doll is a collection of 13 short stories by Daphne du
Maurier written when she was in her late teens/ early 20s.
These stories had the same dark feel that is du Maurier’s
trademark. If you want a happy ending,
don’t read them. I actually began to anticipate
and guess what would go wrong to make the tale really not end well. Even still, while many of the stories were creep
city (The Doll), some of them, like Frustration and The Limpet, were actually borderline humorous in their irony. Don’t Look Now is more sophisticated but this
is definitely a worthwhile read.
