A Mad Men Baby Announcement

SPOILER ALERT!

This week’s episode of Mad Men was titled “The Rejected” and there was plenty of rejection going around. Let’s hit the highlights:

It looks like Pete is going to be a father . . . . again. Hey, even though Trudy didn’t tell him right away, at least she didn’t wait as long as Peggy did.

Speaking of Peggy, she seemed less than thrilled by Pete’s news, even banging her head on a desk. She continues to be caught between her desire to be single and independent (her night out partying with Joyce) and her dreams of being a married housewife (trying on Faye’s engagement ring).

Pete did get a congratulations from Lane, maybe they can share a hooker later.

Thoroughly enjoyed the ending shot of Peggy and Pete gazing at each other through the glass doors. Pete with the old suits and Peggy with the young hipsters. Both moving on in their own way, yet always bound together. Still want to see more interaction between the two as the season progresses.

Another main theme of this episode was fighting the battle of aging as illustrated with the Pond’s ad aimed at regaining a youthful look. We see Pete standing up to his father in law to get a bigger account, Peggy and Pete moving ahead at work, and even Allison standing up to Don. The old guard continues to lose the battle. But Don does show a bit of understanding as he argues with Faye at the end about how the ad campaign her study supports is old fashioned. Are we headed for a Don Draper renaissance?

Another week, another woman leaving Don’s life. Allison’s reaction with Don was great. Lucky for Don she can’t control her fastball. The younger women at SCDP sure are feisty. Maybe Betty should have tried throwing heavy objects at the lying, cheating Don. Seems to have been a bit of a wakeup call for him.

Loved how they replaced Allison with the elderly secretary. No danger of a repeat performance with Don there.

As he starts his letter to Allison Don types, “my life is very” . . . and can't continue. What is Don’s life right now? Complicated? Depressing? Pathetic? I think it’s time for Don to take stock. I have a feeling that’s what is going to happen soon.

And still no Betty this week . . .

And finally, I notice that there are only ten episodes listed for Season 4. There have been thirteen each of the first three seasons. Are we going to get short changed here? Say it ain't so.
